The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) organized a one-day event on January 31, 2024, aimed at tackling the growing challenges of corruption and youth involvement in cybercrime. The event was themed “Youth, Religion, and the Fight Against Corruption.” During the event, the Interfaith Preaching and Teaching Manual was launched by the Interfaith Anti-corruption Advisory Committee (IAAC). The manual is designed to promote anti-corruption values among Islam and Christianity adherents.
The Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, stressed the need to combat corruption, stating that it hinders societal progress. He expressed concern about the increasing convictions related to cybercrime and urged religious leaders and academia to play a pivotal role in reshaping the mindset of young people away from fraudulent activities.
Mr. Olukoyede also announced that the agency will be targeting corrupt politicians and government workers, starting from the Presidential Villa to other government parastatals. He explained that the agency’s efforts in fighting corruption had been frustrated in the past.
CAN President Daniel Chukwudumebi Okoh commend the government’s commitment to fighting corruption, pledging full support to combat the societal menace? The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the role of religious leaders in addressing corruption’s devastating impact on lives and livelihoods.
Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, encouraged the EFCC to tackle corruption without fear or favor. He highlighted the potential for Nigeria’s growth if corruption is effectively addressed and underscored the dangers of cybercrime in an era of advancing artificial intelligence.
Other guests and stakeholders also made significant contributions to the discussions, emphasizing the collaborative efforts needed to combat corruption, particularly focusing on youth involvement in cybercrime and people in government offices. The event marked a crucial step in engaging multiple stakeholders in the fight against economic and financial crimes.
